Symbolism
Virgo is symbolized by a virgin maiden. In Greek mythology, she is associated with Persephone, the daughter of Demeter (the goddess of agriculture). Persephone is kidnapped by Hades to become the Queen of the Underworld, but she is allowed to return to Earth and live with her mother for bits at a time. Every time she leaves for the Underworld, the crops on land wither away.
This story represents the changing of the seasons, but it’s also associated with purity, practicality, and being of service. It emphasizes the importance of tangible, real-world outcomes. Likewise, Virgos find their greatest fulfillment when they’re able to give back in useful and meaningful ways. The Maiden may also symbolize health and wellness, which is a key focus in the life of a Virgo.
Ruling Planet
Each sign in the zodiac has a ruling planet. The planets dictate how the signs behave and shape how they express themselves. By understanding the ruling planets and what role they play in a chart, we can better understand someone’s temperament, potential life path, and areas of focus or challenge in a birth chart.
This is one of many reasons why every birth chart is unique. Not every person born under a certain zodiac sign will have their sign’s ruling planet in the same house, sign, or making the same aspects to other planets. When reading a chart, all parts of the chart need to be taken into account, not just one.
For example, a Taurus placement (ruled by Venus) with their Venus in Aries (the sign of its fall) will have a much different expression of their Taurus traits than if Venus was in a more comfortable place, like Pisces (the sign of its exaltation).
While ruling planets are by no means the sole determinant in a birth chart, they are significant factors in the intricate tapestry of astrology.
Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the “messenger of the gods.” As the messenger, Mercury is the planet of communication, intellect, and learning. As an Earth sign ruled by Mercury, Virgos have an analytical and detail-oriented mindset. They excel in breaking down information and focusing on the finer points.
Mercury signifies Virgo’s intellectual curiosity and organizational skills. Virgos may excel in planning, learning, and overall maintaining order in various aspects of their lives.
They are critical thinkers, capable of analyzing situations and making well-informed decisions based on fact (or at least, what they believe to be fact).
If you have Virgo placements, look to see what Mercury is doing in your birth chart. Study its sign, house, and aspects.
What house is Mercury in, and what is its role there? How does your Mercury behave in the sign that it’s in?
Is Mercury making any hard aspects to other planets in your chart? Or do you have mostly soft aspects? How about a mixture of the two?
Are there any benefic (Jupiter or Venus) or malefic (Mars or Saturn) influences involved? Does Mercury make an aspect to your Virgo placements at all?
These questions are by no means exhaustive of everything that goes into analyzing a placement, but it’s a great start to understanding how the energy plays out in your life. Certain conditions of Mercury could supercharge, minimize, or further complicate your relationship to Virgo qualities.
Element
In astrology, each zodiac sign is classified by one of the four elements: Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. We can look at the elements as shared traits between the signs, shaping the way each sign approaches life, relationships, and the world around them. Virgo is one of the three Earth signs, along with Capricorn and Taurus.
Earth signs are grounded, pragmatic individuals. Their focus trends towards practicality, concerned with matters such as financial security and tangible results. These signs are diligent and responsible, and work hard towards their goals.
Having a secure environment is vital for an Earth sign’s wellbeing. But because they seek stability at all costs, they can also stay in unproductive situations longer than they should to avoid sacrificing their comfort.
As an Earth sign ruled by Mercury, Virgos thrive within structure. These are extremely efficient, productive individuals. Their cerebral nature helps them to identify the right and wrong way of getting things done.
Modality
Aside from their element group, each zodiac sign is part of a specific modality: cardinal, mutable, and fixed. The modality of a sign represents the part of the season that the sign falls in. It mostly describes the way that a sign approaches change and what role they play in the cycle of life. Virgo is one of the four mutable signs, along with Sagittarius, Pisces, and Gemini. It is the only mutable Earth sign.
Representing the beginning of a season, cardinal signs are the initiators, leading us into new territory. Fixed signs represent the middle, sustaining what’s been done and never straying too far from it. Mutable signs are the end of a season, and help us transition away from the old ways to make room for the new.
The greatest strength of a mutable sign is their versatility. They excel in multitasking and juggling a diverse range of interests and skills, which helps them to fit like a chameleon into any social setting. Mutable signs are wonderful listeners, and are capable of understanding many different points of view.
As a Mutable Earth sign ruled by Mercury, Virgo is a bit more grounded and purposeful than the other mutable signs. As they adapt to their environment, they focus on identifying what should be changed rather than just change for change’s sake. Their attention to detail and focus on efficiency allows them to remain open to adjustments so that they can make improvements when necessary.
Sometimes, because Virgos are always on the hunt for perfection, they can be overly critical of themselves or others. But, their refusal to ever settle for less is also what makes them such great problem-solvers.
